Media, Pop Culture and Politics

Finding an artifact that describes Jeb Bush was not too difficult to find, considering that he has been really well known since his time as the governor of Florida. The artifact I found was an online opinion column within USA Today. This column was specifically reviewing Bush’s time as governor and how it is all going to play into him potentially running in 2016. This column really believed that Jeb Bush is seen as moderate, but his time as governor says that he is actually much more conservative.

Throughout this column, it shows some of Jeb’s good and bad aspects in his time as governor. Specifically it explains how he was successful in being able to pass an agenda with various policies concerning Floridians. It also explained how Bush put limits on abortions, which ensures that he is pro-life. During his term as governor Florida was known as one of the nation’s most pro-gun states, which pushes the opinion of how he is more conservative than he seems. Another aspect included in this opinion column, was Jeb’s educational plan that he put in place during his two terms in Florida. It goes on to explain how this plan for schools upset many families, but it on the other side it also allowed for options for the parents. Although this column to a certain extent criticized Jeb Bush’s actions as governor, many states have still used his policies in their own states. Most of the judgments about Jeb’s policies have for the majority came from Democrats and more specifically teacher’s unions because of the changes he made with his educational plan.

This column describes Jeb Bush as effective in the actions he has taken, very conservative, but maybe not strong enough to win over voters in 2016. After reading this column, I think it helps shape the image the candidate is trying to project for the most part. Going back to the second blog post about Jeb’s image, then and now I still believe that he needs to create an independent image and also show that he can be successful in the political world without his family members, which is what this column proved. The USA Today column really focused on what he had done individually and didn’t focused on his family ties, which all helped shape the image Jeb Bush would possibly want to portray for 2016. Granted there are certain aspects that are pushing back against his desired image, such as how he is actually more conservative than seen publicly and also how his actions as governor had some negative reactions at certain times. We have to keep in mind though that no candidate is perfect, especially with varying opinions.

  1. As you mentioned the USA Today column really focuses on what Jeb has done as an individual rather than linking him to his family, do you think that's really a bad thing? Yes, he's from a famous political family but do you think that would do more harm or good being a "Bush"?

  2. Morgan, I liked reading your post. In order to differentiate himself from his family, do you think some of his policies should change?

  3. Abby: From what I have read lately many do not see Jeb being a "Bush" as a good thing, so that is why I see him being linked to his family doing more harm than good.

Jordan: I don't think he needs to completely change his policies to differentiate himself from his family. Instead I believe he should just focus on what he believes and I have seen already policies that have slightly started to differ from his father's and brother's.
